In the meantime, be sure to check out this video of Michael reading his immigrant grandma from Ukraine, Vera, the dedication to our book:

Immigrant grandma Vera adopted Michael as her grandson when he was a toddler, after meeting him in a community center. At the time, Michael was (and is)  friends with Vera’s other two grandsons, Levko and Lukyan.

Michael’s relationship with Vera was recently the focus of a Voice of America article that was widely shared. In addition, to wanting to dedicate the book to Vera, Michael created her character, insisting that she be both the coach of the most successful girls’ team in the state AND the assistant mayor.

Vera grew up in Soviet-occupied Ukraine and overcame much hardship. As a child, she was always hungry, and her mother grew grass and beets for the family to help feed her children.

The amazing Vera also lost all her savings–$10,000-after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Vera raised her two children as a single working mother, and knitted and sewed clothing at night to make extra money.

In the US, she sells home-made food and also babysits to raise money for Ukrainians affected by war, especially children who have lost their fathers in war, like Vera did as a young child.

She inspires everyone around her with her goodness, spunk and generosity.

You can read more about her in this translation of the Voice of America article
